Corematodus taeniatus "Kande"

Corematodus taeniatus is mainly living above stretched sandy bottoms in shallow water near intermediate zones from rocks to sand. Usually they keep up in big schools of sand-dwelling cichlids above these sandbottoms however when it`s spawning time they go to the intermediate zone where breeding individuals keep up near rocky islands. They can be found in entire Lake Malawi. Sometimes in trade this species is offered as "Haplochromis Jacksoni". This young example was caught in the neighbourhood of Kande Island.

The males of these species can grow to about 19 cm in the lake, females grow to about 13 cm. In the aquarium however they can grow a little taller because of a good feeding.

Corematodus taeniatus is behaving reasonable agressive against male conspecifics, other species they are leaving alone outside of the mating season.
You can best keep this species with multiple females, however without other inhabitants, in a large special decorated tank with a lot of swimming space for them exclusively.

In the lake Corematodus taeniatus feeds mainly with scales from the caudal peduncle of all sand-dwelling species with a crooked diagonal stripe on its body like Mylochromis species. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix.
